I recently decided to start posting fun, band interviews on my blog, and continuing in the series we have the astounding Courage My Love! This three-piece, Canadian band have been together since 2009. They’ve accomplished many things in their time together, and have released many hit tracks with their latest release Synesthesia making it into my 10 best albums of 2017. I’ve composed a few fun questions that have been answered by the phenomenal lead vocalist and guitarist, Mercedes Arn-Horn, so you can get more of an insight into this incredible woman and her band.
1. What do you love most about being in a band?
Personally, my favorite part of this whole big adventure is having the ability to express myself in a creative way. Having a relationship with music that allows me to channel my feelings into something productive has definitely changed my life for the better, and I couldn’t be more grateful. A lot of our fans will come to us and mention that our music has helped them through a rough time, and they don’t realize that it’s done the same for us. I love being able to relate to people on that level.
2. If you could play with any other band, who would it be?
I always say this, but my all time dream would be to play with Radiohead. They’ve been a huge inspiration for me for a while, and it’s kind of selfish of me but I’d just love to watch them do their thing.
3. Tell us a memorable moment you’ve had with a fan?
4. If you had to add one song to your setlist forever, what would it be and why?
I really love playing Need Someone live. I just love the way it comes in, the vibe live, the message of the song, and the way it seems to strike a chord with the audience.
5. Who are your style inspirations?
Honestly, I love Mac Demarco’s style. He’s got this way of making things that otherwise would seem mundane totally unique. He always seems relaxed and comfy, but very planned out and put together at the same time. I’m a fan of old hats and comfy sweaters, so his style definitely speaks to me.
6. What was the biggest challenge you had with making Synesthesia?
I think our biggest challenge was trying to find ways that we could evolve our sound, and grow as artists. We’ve always wanted to be the band that changes from album to album, yet keeps that “Courage My Love” sound. We wanted to play with different guitar tones and synth elements, vocal stylings, etc, to bring a different vibe to the album and show people another side of our songwriting abilities. I guess that’s always a challenge with every album, but in this case we really wanted to go outside of our comfort zones and try something different.
7. Name a tv series you think everyone should watch?
8. Name one place you always love to play at and why.
9. What is one of your favourite things about being on tour?
I really enjoy traveling and being exposed to new things. I find it very inspiring to be in a new place that’s unfamiliar. Plus, getting to play shows every night and seeing familiar faces, as well as new ones, is always so rewarding.
10. What is the first piece of band merch you remember buying?
It was definitely a CD. I’m pretty sure it was Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge by MCR.
11. If you had to get a tattoo of one of the other band members who would it be and why?
I’d get a portrait of Phoenix, and everyone would probably think it was a portrait of myself. That’d be pretty funny. Maybe I’ll actually do it.
12. What can we expect from Courage My Love next?
We’re working on new music, and have some touring plans already for 2018. So keep your eyes and ears open!
13. Any Final Words?
If you’re reading this, thanks so much for checking us out. Give our new album a listen, and thanks so much for supporting new music.
