Halloween is approaching guys, and it’s time to start working on that costume. If you’re anything like me, you’ll need to plan in advance and get your gear ready before October has begun or you’ll end up giving up on your costume and going casual. But never fear, if you’re still stuck on ideas now that October is here, I have you covered. I think I’ve decided what I’m going to go as this year but whether it works out or not will be another story. When searching through Pinterest there are 100s of ideas for halloween costumes, but I didn’t find a lot of them particularly great for the occasion, so I’ve decided to share with you my top costumes ideas for 2017. All of the costumes on this list are based on characters, but I hope you can get some inspiration.
The Mighty Boosh: Old Gregg/Hitcher
We’ll start off with what I went as last year. I adore The Mighty Boosh and you can never go wrong with an Old Gregg costume whether it’s at Halloween or Download festival. I actually went as the Zooniverse version of Vince Noir last year, but I had a lot of fun planning and making the costume. I had to take photos at a gig so I needed something that I was able to move around, and feel comfortable in. I also didn’t want to have to wear a mask or wig so it worked out well. If Vince isn’t scary enough for you and you don’t fancy wearing a pink tutu, why not try going for the Hitcher or even the Crack Fox. He was pretty terrifying.
Saw: Billy The Puppet
This was one of my favourite costume ideas I found through Pinterest. There are a lot of great makeup looks and costume tutorials available, and it’s also a pretty easy costume to produce. I used to watch Saw II a lot when I was younger, and while it was pretty scary, I always kind of loved the puppet and the idea behind the franchise.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice
Want to go a little more child friendly? How about Beetlejuice? This is the perfect halloween film and why not costume? I think he has a pretty interesting appearance, and as long as you can get your hands on a stripy suit, it should be easy enough to execute. He also has a creepy personality that you could play up to. Heck, he even creeped me out at Universal Studios. Alternatively you could go as Lydia Deetz, in or out of wedding attire.
The Addams Family: Wednesday Addams
This was my costume 2 years ago, basic right? But always an easy one to fall back on if you have limited time planning or executing a costume. It’s still a bit of effort and everyone loves the Addams Family right? My family used to say I looked like Wednesday so it was also playing up to the personal joke a bit. I even made her headless doll to give the costume a bit more character. Don’t forget there’s also Morticia, Comez, Pudsley, Cousin IT and Uncle Fester if Wednesday isn’t your thing.
IT is a big thing right now, and I wonder if it’ll even take over Harley Quinn this year. I am still yet to see the movie but I think that the new costume is pretty cool. I have also seen some very good Instagram makeup looks recreating the character already. If you’re big on horror movies and enjoyed this adaptation, why not give it a go? Or why not be hipster and stick to the original costume? (Has the clown costume ban been lifted yet? I’m not sure).
American Horror Story
American Horror Story has so many costume inspiration, and if you haven’t seen it yet you better hurry and do your research. From the white nun artwork, to young Moria, there are so many options to choose from. Personally, Coven is my favourite series and if you need something simple look no further. However, you could also go more extravagant such as Twisty the clown, grab a friend and go as Bette and Dot Tattler or put your makeup skills to the test and go as Tate Langdon complete with skull face.
The Walking Dead: Negan
Again, The Walking Dead has many great possibilities for characters that you could dress up as. If going in a group you could all assign each other a character most like them in a zombie apocalypse. However, my favourite costume idea is Negan. (Please don’t wrap barbed wire around a baseball bat and go out with it). I had this idea a while ago for a heroes & villains party, but I didn’t end up going and it seemed like a bit of a hassle costume for me. But it might be easier if you have some of the stuff at home already. It’s quite simple and could be a lot of fun.
Bride of Chucky
A common one, but it never fails. This would also make a perfect couples costume, and why not switch things up by making the guy Tiffany? I adored Bride of Chucky when I was younger, I thought Tiffany was super badass and I think girls adaptations of Chucky’s costume on Pinterest look great. If going alone, you could dress up as Tiffany and take a Chucky doll around with you. Just don’t forget the small details such as the cigarette and heart tattoo by her boob. Who doesn’t love an opportunity to wear a leather jacket with a wedding dress?
The Joker can be a bit overdone at times, but always looks great. There’s many different adaptions of the character that you could do, from classic comic book to Jared Leto. I think my personal favourite is Heath Ledger’s version of the character, while dressed as a nurse. There’s a lot of great female cosplays available on Pinterest for inspiration if you wanted to make it a bit more dressy for a night out.
Five Finger Death Punch: Ivan Moody
Finally, for those of you who are bald, or at least willing to shave your head for the purpose of Halloween… Ivan Moody is your answer. Slap a red hand print across your right eye, throw on a Five Finger Death Punch t-shirt and you’ll be good to go. Sadly my boyfriend has to work over Halloween, but this was my costume suggestion for him if he could make it. I think I might just make him do it when we go to see them in December instead.
Well that’s all. I hope this post gave you some inspiration, and have fun getting spooky.

Mine is one on this list which you’ll probably see on Instagram. April.
